Arts Mineral Point is about continuing a rich local arts legacy spanning eight decades. It's about helping resident artistsrealize their goals. It's about complimenting existing arts tourism efforts. It's about drawing artists here to live and thrive for generations to come. It's about increasing the vibrancy and awareness of the arts scene. In short, we want to amp it up.
In early 2013, a group of artists and business people began a dialog. Over the course of the year, several common themes emerged. Three questions were distilled:
How do we increase outside awareness about the art scene in Mineral Point?
What programs can we create to help artists in Mineral Point grow and thrive?
How do we enhance an environment that will encourage new artists to settle in Mineral Point, for generations to come?
Of course, these are broad questions that have many answers. To take on this ambitious mission; we created a statement about our work that will serve us well, into the future:
"Our Mission is to Nurture and Promote the Arts in Mineral Point."
We organized a committee under the auspices of Point Forward, Inc., a 501c3 non-profit organization formed to encourage tourism in Mineral Point.
Since then, we've wasted little time. In the autumn of 2013, we dedicated the first of several small "pocket" sculpture parks: The High Point Arts Sculpture Park. The parcel, generously loaned to us by retired art professor Jamie Ross, will be home to several outdoor sculptures created by local and regional artists.
These artworks will be exhibited on a rotating basis. Several will be offered for sale, with a portion of the proceeds benefitting Arts Mineral Point. This year-round activity will meet our goal of promoting the arts, and will nurture local artists by offering venues to display public art.
At the end of 2013 we devised our first large event: The First Annual Mineral Point Paint-Out, to be held August 7 - 9, 2014. This event will bring regional artists skilled in painting en plein air, to Mineral Point. Visitors will be able watch painters create the artworks, and get a chance to purchase their favorites. Artworks will be judged and artists will vie for about $3,000 in cash and prizes.
Arts Mineral Point will receive a commission on each sold painting. This annual event will fulfill our mission to promote Mineral Point as a place to make art, as well as to promote the area's inherent beauty.
In early 2014, the group formed committee to: Identify specific artist needs, establish a realistic budget, and then match those needs and budget with available commercial space. The goal is broad but important: establish a location where artists can meet, create, collaborate, exhibit: an Incubator. This place will not only fill our mission to nurture artists. It will provide a magnet for artists considering Mineral Point for their home. The committee is very encouraged that we can establish a space in 2014.
